Google AdSense is getting more and more notorious especially because of smart pricing, sudden disabling of AdSense accounts, and the decrease in earnings probably because of imminent shutting down of sites doing AdSense arbitrage.
With those reasons, who would blame publishers if they look for better methods of monetizing their sites? One is through looking for direct advertisers. One article even discussed about why sponsorships are better than AdSense.
I think the goodness of direct sponsors in helping monetize a site depends on the niche and maturity of the site. There are those who are better off with AdSense combined with sponsorships while there are those sites which may earn more from AdSense than sponsorships because of the difficulty in looking for sponsors or other factors.
