When users click your ad link, a new window would open and they will be presented with a page of sponsored links. The difference with the normal ad units is that you only get paid after the users click on the 2nd page and not on the link itself.
Some people don't bother using ad links but there are some benefits to it. One benefit I observe is that when people click on the ad link, the 2nd page presented does not have any other content except sponsored links. There is a much bigger chance for them to click on one of these links instead of pressing the back button or typing something at the address bar.
One very good placement of the vertical ad link is on the upper left side of your page. Normally, websites has a left vertical menu. If you could place vertical ad link on top of this menu, and you mimic your menu to look like the ad link, then I bet you would see more clicks on these ad links.
Horizontal ad links are nice because it looks just like your horizontal menu. Best for this is above the fold, after your header graphic.
